Description
Northern Europe, Viking / Norse, ca. 9th to 12th century CE. A pretty silver arm ring twisted about its own axis and decorated with applied twisted wire fillets. The surface has punched pellets and triangles. The ends are coiled about the shank. Silver was the principal currency of the Viking world, which stretched from Russia to northern Canada at the height of their influence. In many places, the Vikings kept silver not as coins, but as jewelry, a wearable currency that was not subject to the authority of a monarch or mint. Size: 3.375" W (8.6 cm); 37.6 grams
