Description
Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec, ca. 900 to 500 BCE. A finely carved and string cut jade figure, of a near miniature and apparently pregnant form, with long arms wrapped around her pronounced protruding belly, her belly button and genitalia delineated as well, possibly intended to both stand and lay on her back. Her face displays quintessential Olmec features including an elongated head, a jowly "babyface" visage with a downturned jaguar-like mouth, slightly slanted eyes, and phalange ears. A special Olmec sculptural work, quite unusual as depictions of pregnancy are rarely represented by the Olmec, indeed the first Mesoamerican civilization that most regard as the forerunner of subsequent ancient American cultures including the Maya and Aztecs. Perforated behind the neck for suspension or attachment. Size: 1.25" W x 2.875" H (3.2 cm x 7.3 cm)
In addition to its carefully delineated features and rare pregnant female form is the inherently beautiful jade stone, boasting stunning blue-green hues and contrasting pale seafoam green inclusions, with red cinnabar rubbed into the recessed areas. An exemplar of Olmec sculpture, impressive for its technique, iconography, and well as the beauty of the jade.
