Description
Pre-Columbian, probably Guatemala, ca. 550 BCE. A head presenting hallmark Olmecoid facial features such as its jowly cheeks, a downturned jaguar mouth, and slanted eyes - carved from a grey volcanic stone. On the head is a helmet - the Olmec traditionally wore tight-fitting helmets and scholars believe that the resulting artificial cranial deformation was a sign of elite status. A special example. Size: 2.875" W x 3.75" H (7.3 cm x 9.5 cm)
