Description
This is a very fine old example of a "Wan Palega" or "Large Antelope" wooden mask from the Mossi peoples of Burkina faso, West Africa. This highly decorated old hand carved wooden mask features incised and painted geometric designs, with a wonderful stylized antelope form, including long swept back horns and elongated snout. This mask is known as Wan palega, the large antelope, and would appear at annual public festivals, agricultural harvest festivals and funerals of important chiefs and tribal leaders. Each Mossi family has its own mask, and they are charged with protecting the masks to this day. Masks are very sacred, and are a link to the spirits of ancestors and of nature. The mask measures 27 x 8 inches ( 31 inches on professional high quality display stand)
