Description
Hand and machine sewn linen 35 star flag. The 35th star was added to the American flag in recognition of West Virginia's statehood on June 20, 1863. Sixteen months later Nevada became the 36th state, rendering national flags with 35 stars obsolete. The blue canton measures 25" x 28.5 and contains thirty-five hand cut white cotton stars arrayed in five rows of six and one row of five. Behind each star the canton has been cut to reveal the star on the obverse side of the flag. Heading (bearing two grommets) is inscribed by the maker "E. Filley & Son."
