Description
An old wooden mask from the Baule peoples, Cote De Ivorie, West Africa. Carved wood with an exaggerated carving style, raised facial features and a very well carved coiffure, most impressive!. The mask interior and edges all show wear and handling, suggesting possible ceremonial use. The mask itself measures 15 x 9 inches. Among the Baule such masks appeared in the final sequence of an operatic public entertainment known as Mblo. Mblo performances consist of a succession of dances that escalate in complexity and importance, culminating ultimately in tributes to the community's most distinguished member. Individuals honored in this way are depicted by a mask that is conceived of as their artistic double or namesake, hence the name "Portrait Mask"
