Mother of God of Korsun, 18th century, Russia, tempera on wooden board, size 26.5 x 22.5 cm, The Korsun Virgin, like the Virgin of Vladimir or the Virgin of the Don, is an example of the Oumileinye or 'Tenderness'type. It is said to have been brought from Chersonesus, an important Byzantine city on the Black Sea, to Kiev by Prince Vladimir the Great in 988. The icon emphasizes the human aspect of Christ and the focal point is the intimatetie with his mother, against whom he is nestling. Colourful painted icon in red tone against a white Provenance: Private Collection Germany.
