Item Details
Description
Imaginary Conversations of Literary Men and Statesmen. Walter Savage Landor. Published by Henry Colburn and James Duncan, 1826. Binding: Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket. Edition: 2nd Edition. This is the complete 5 volume set (512, 632, 546, 527 and 548 pages), of "Imaginary Conversations of Literary Men and Statesmen", volumes I through III noted as the second editon, corrected and enlarged, with volumes I and II dated 1826, and volume III dated 1828. These were published by Henry Colburn, London. Volumes IV and V, published by James Duncan in 1829, are noted as the Second Series, Volumes I and II All five are from the St. Johnsbury (Vermont) Athenaeum, with a bookplate to that effect on each front inside cover. There is one card pocket, to the inside back cover of Volume I. There are a few smaller residues to the marbled inside cover spreads, but they are clean overall, and with little fade. There are small attached library number notations to the upper outside corners of the inside front covers, and there are several pencil notations to the end (mostly front) pages. There are blind embossed athenaeum stamps to the title pages. There are no other stamps, and no writing, throughout the book bodies. Most page faces are clean, with few or no stains, but many pages have stains, mostly foxing, and a number are significantly stained. No text is obscured. There are several cracked gutters, but the binding is secure in all volumes, with no loose or missing pages. There are some creased corners, but, again, most corners are not creased, and there are few other creases. There are no notable tears. The gilt page tops are lightly scuffed, but bright and clean overall. The covers (9" x 6"), dark leather spines and outside corners, marbled paper boards, have moderate edge wear and some surface cracking to the leather, particular at the sides, with some material missing. All five covers are securely bound, with spines that are straight and with unfaded gilt lettering. The five raised bands and gilt decoration are in good condition. The marbled boards are mostly good, but the top front of Volume V is discolored, and there is light sunning to a few other borders.
