Description
BELGIUM/EUROPE, 18TH-EARLY 19TH CENTURY A fine Flemish Baroque polychrome decorated carved and gessoed wood figure of baby Jesus. The figure was naturalistically modeled with a smoothly carved surface emulating the pudgy and soft skin of a newborn. Notice the pink flesh tones of his face and intricately painted lips and teeth. The figure is adorned with inset painted glass eyes. The figure is mounted on a parcel gilt and red painted pillow top pedestal with acanthus leaf ornamentation. The figure is accompanied with an eighteenth century European gilt and carved wood figure of an angel.
