Description
Impressionist scene, well listed artist, on canvas, image area 16" X 18" plus gold frame...Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, she left there to live with her father, Henry Fish, on a Kansas sheep ranch where she was raised on land that bordered the wild territory where Indians, wolves, and coyotes roamed the plains. Her father, with little education but with blue-blood ties to the Stuyvesants of New York state, had a library with many books about sheep, and she was fascinated by these animals and drew pictures all over the margins. As a child, she was raised as a tomboy, doing much sheep herding and other ranching chores but at age ten returned to her grandmother's home in St. Joseph, Missouri to attend school. After that, she joined her father, who had moved to Wellington, Kansas, and there she got her first formal art education. Soon after she went to Texas where she taught butter-dish and shovel decoration to young ladies living along the Rio Grande River. From Texas, she went to Chicago to see the Chicago's Worlds Fair in 1888, and the next year she moved to that city. In 1894, she entered the Art Institute of Chicago and graduated in 1900, having been an instructor there her last year. She married August Glaman, her childhood sweetheart who was a cigar maker from Wellington, Kansas. After her graduation, they moved temporarily to a sheep ranch near Montgomery, Alabama, and she did a number of sheep paintings including "The Old Sheep Fold," which was exhibited at the St. Louis Exposition, winning a bronze medal and later purchased by the Chicago Commission.Knowing she wanted to be an animal painter, she went to Paris where she studied drawing with the animal sculptor Emmanuel Fremiet and painted with the American Impressionist, Lawton Parker. While studying with Fremiet, she sketched lions and tigers at the Jardin des Plants zoo. She then went to London where she studied with Frank Calderon, who had a school of animal painting on Baker Street and had an extensive anatomy studio with a wide variety of animal skeletons. Two years after her return from Europe to Chicago, she exhibited at the Chicago Art Institute and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Ever looking for subject matter, she frequented the Chicago Union Stockyards shows, and with the support of stockyards president, Arthur Leonard, built her studio in The Exchange Building next to the stockyards. A major work completed at the stockyards was a portrait of "Mercer," a grand champion steer, which toured the United States in a trailer. The painting of him was hung in the Saddle and Sirloin Club in Chicago.Later in her career, she became more interested in etching than painting and completed a number of copper and zinc plates, some from her former paintings and sketches. She was elected to the American Society of Etchers. As an older woman, she traveled with her daughter, Johanna, to the Rocky Mountains and to Nova Scotia where she got subject matter for a number of impressive landscape etchings.
