Description
On The Run - Signed 1st Edition 1991, Carroll & Graf. NY 1st Edition Baseball A sports bio with more substance than most. Sometime baseball star Wills grew up in Anacostia, one of Washington's bleaker black ghettos. Though runty, he was athletically gifted and earned himself a contract with the Dodgers. Having served an eight-year apprenticeship in the minors, Wills was called up in 1959; an electrifying base runner, he spark-plugged the club (which by then had moved to L.A.) to a National League pennant and World Series win in his first season. In 1962, Wills stole 104 bases, breaking a record then held by Ty Cobb and becoming a name attraction. When his productive on-field career ended in 1972, the author soon caught on as a broadcaster with NBC. Quitting this job to pursue an ungrateful white woman named Judy, who led him a merry and expensive chase, he was introduced to the coke scene. Toward the end of the 1980 season, the Seattle Mariners offered him a chance to manage. Hooked on narcotics and besotted with the faithless Judy (who had sex with his son Bump while Wills looked on helplessly), he was fired by Seattle early in 1981. From that point until mid-1989, the unhappy author wandered about in a drugged-up alcoholic haze. Once clean, Wills picked up the pieces of a shattered life and, he asserts, helps others to avoid his mistakes. In recounting what might charitably be described as his varied experiences, Wills cops a lot of pleas.
