Description
**First Time At Auction**
Greece, Archaic Period, ca. 6th century BCE. A large mold-made votive bust of a woman. She wears a polos hat over a towering wiglike hairstyle and her hair falls in long sections over her shoulders. This excellent example has an Archaic-period face - realistic, but not yet showing the individualized portrayals of the Classical era. She has the "Archaic smile", which researchers believe means that the subject is intended to appear alive and peaceful. She wears large round earrings and was probably at one time painted brightly. The bust seems to have been made in a mold to attach to something - perhaps a pole based on the round opening in its base. Size: 3.9" W x 8.45" H (9.9 cm x 21.5 cm); 9.7" H (24.6 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Swiss collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
