A GROUP OF TWO ETCHING AND LINE ENGRAVINGS FROM WILLIAM HOGARTH (English 1697-1764) "THE INDUSTRIOUS PRENTICE," LONDON, ENGLAND, 1747, LATER 19TH CENTURY PRINTING, comprising Plate 1 "The Fellow Prentices at their Looms," with two apprentices as they begin their term at the same shop, on the right Francis Goodchild is seated, working diligently at his loom while at the left sits Thomas Idle, fast asleep at his loom, the side borders with a hangman's rope and manacles on the left, and a sword of state and the mace of the city of London on the right, the bottom border with reserved cartouches quoting Proverbs 23:21 and 10:4; and Plate 4 "The Industrious Prentice a Favourite and entrusted by his Master," with the prospering and promoted Francis Goodchild wearing new clothing and wig, holding an order book while embraced by his master Mr. West, the bottom border with reserved cartouche quoting Matthew 25:21; both signed in the plate "Designed & Engraved by Wm. Hogarth, Publish'd According to an Act of Parliament 30 Sept 1747." Height: 10 1/2" Width: 13 3/4"

Both plates with heavy foxing and browning of the paper stock, Plate 1 with losses to the borders, tears, and old tape residue.
