A pair of Ashanti bronze gold weights, early - mid 20th Century, each with geometric decoration and attractive tone. 16 x 14 mm and 31 x 7 mm. The weights are manufactured using the 'lost wax' method and were made during the period the Ashanti's economy was growing, mainly due to war, conquest, booty and trade. The colonial administration in the region banned the use of gold dust as currency in 1894 and forbid the use and manufacture of these weights in 1896. Ex Early Times Auctions, (July 1978) lot J-44.
