Description
This is a beautiful Victorian sterling silver rouge pot or pill box, made by Gorham in the 1890s. The lid and sides are decorated with a lovely and intricate repousse design featuring a variety of flowers and leaves. The repousse is enhanced by hand-chased detailing to the background. This petite box is in excellent condition with a perfectly fit lid and would make a great gift!
It measures 2" x 7/8" and weighs 30.5 grams, or 0.98 Troy ounces. The inner rim is marked "STERLING" and with the Gorham maker's marks. The bottom is marked with the pattern number "418" and has an interlocking "HF" monogram engraved in the center. This inside of the box is marked with the numbers "100" and "101."
Gorham Silver was founded in 1831 by Jabez Gorham, in partnership with Henry Webster, in Providence, Rhode Island. Originally a manufacturer of coin-silver flatware, the company began focusing on sterling silver in 1868, producing everything from flatware such as knives, forks, and spoons to hollowware pieces ranging from coffee pots to serving bowls. Gorham even created signature show pieces in the Martele style, most famously a silver dressing table and cushioned stool, which beat Tiffany in the silver furniture category at the 1900 Paris World Fair.
