Description
**First Time At Auction**
North America, Green River Formation, modern-day Wyoming, Lower Eocene period, ca. 50 million years ago. A pair of small fish that have undergone the process of fossilization. The morphology of both specimens, most notably the upturned mouths, are typical of surface-feeding fish. The genus they belong to are herrings that probably fed on smaller surface-dwelling fish such as Knightia. Many fossils have been found with Knightia in their stomachs or mouths. Both fish have large eyes, several rows of tightly-packed scales, and one displays a thin bifurcated tail. Abraded away from the surrounding stone. Size: 7.7" L (19.6 cm).
