Description
A liqueur glass from the Banqueting Service of Grand Duchess Alexander Iosifovna, Imperial Glassworks, circa 1850. Mouthblown and wheelengraved, the faceted bowl engraved with the Grand Duchess' Imperial cypher with Slavonic style, vyaz letters, the stem with one wide knop, the spreading foot with polished pontil mark on the underside. 1311-047. H. 4 1/8 in. Grand Duchess Alexandra Iosifovna (1830-1911), born Princess Alexandra of Saxe-Altenburg, married Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich (1827-1892) in 1848. Konstantin was an instrumental figure in Russia's Great Reforms, including the emancipation of the serfs and the reform of the Russian Navy. The couple had a difficult marriage, caused in part by the scandalous (and even criminal) behavior of their eldest son, Grand Duke Nikolai Konstantinovich (1850-1918). Their second child, Olga Konstantinovna (1867-1913), married King George I of the Hellenes and became Queen Consort of the Hellenes. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, is her grandson.
