Description
A Russian porcelain open salt from the Gothic Service, Imperial Porcelain Factory, period of Nicholas I (1825-1855), after 1832. The interior of the round salt almost entirely gilded with the exception of the base, which is decorated with a gilt flowerhead, the molded upper rim on the exterior decorated with colorful floral band with cisele gilt ornament on a sky blue ground, the tapering body with vibrant multicolored fields separated by gilt bands, raised on tapering gilt foot, the underside with blue Imperial cypher mark of Nicholas I. The vibrant colors of the Gothic Service were meant to evoke the jewel tones stained glass windows in Gothic cathedrals and to harmonize with the Gothic Revival design of the Alexandria Cottage, beloved residence of Nicholas I and his wife, Empress Alexandrovna Feodorovna. Work on this service was completed between 1832 and 1834, although later additions were made for use in the Gothic Cottage, a beloved retreat of the Imperial family. 1401-502.
