Fitted with an ultra-thin self-winding movement, the calibre 1003 set a new slimness record at just 1.64 mm thin, making it the world’s thinnest hand-wound movement. Developed in conjunction with Audemars Piguet and Jaeger Lecoultre, it’s one of the most refined of ultra-thin movements and has aroused considerable interest from specialists and collectors.
The vanishingly small clearances for the hands are worth a close look as they reveal just what a tight fit it is for all the components inside the watch, and the case-making alone is worth the price of admission – Vacheron managed to make the case both extremely thin, and yet rigid enough to make a safe-as-houses home for the caliber 1003 inside.
Though it’s a very simple timepiece, it’s also impeccably made throughout. The crystal is free of deep scratches; the Roman numeral gilt dial is in terrific condition as are the thin blued steel ultra-fine hands. The 18K gold case is stamped throughout and offers up a beautiful vintage patina without any deep scratches or gouges.
