Description
A large Narino figure from the Capuli cultural complex, c. 850 - 1500 AD, portraying a squatting female holding a flute or snuff tube with both hands. Her legs are modeled in high relief, the arms are hand-modeled appliques and a wad of coca bulges out her left cheek, H: 10 1/2 in. The entire piece is covered with the black-on-red resist painted designs characteristic of the type. Cf. Labbe 'Colombia Before Columbus', page 162.
