London: Willyam Norton, 1577. 1st Edition in English. 3 preliminary leaves, 109 leaves, [2] pages. 7 1/4 by 5 1/4 inches in a handsome full polished calf fine binding in period style with 5 raised bands and a leather label to the spine. All edges gilt. A rare book, the first English translation of a work originally published in Spain in three parts, in 1565, 1571, and 1574. The focus of the book is on the medicinal and curative properties of New World plants and animals found in the West Indies, including sassafras, peppers, barley, cebadilla, and armadillos and sharks. With decorative initial letters throughout and woodcut illustrations in the text of sassafras, carlos santo, barley, long pepper, balsam, an armadillo and more. DNB VII, p. 599 (Frampton). Title page is stained and restored/mounted; the 2 leaves of the introduction are in facsimile on old matching paper with chain lines. The final leaf ("The Table of the thinges that these three Bookes doe containe," has been professionally restored. The page edges show toning/discoloration at the margins throughout. Otherwise the book is complete and in Good condition in a lovely sympathetic binding to style.
