British East Indian/Murshidabad School (19th century), Suttee Scene, circa 1820-30, oil on mica, unsigned, sight: 8"h x 10"w, overall (with frame): 14"h x 16"w. Provenance: Estate of Thomas Williamson (Orinda, CA). Note: A Suttee was a long standing practice in India when the husband's widow(s) allowed themselves to be burned to death on funeral pyres. This practice was made iillegal in 1830.
