Description
**First Time At Auction**
West Africa, Niger River Delta area, possibly Oron or Eket peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A carved wooden squatting female figure with long legs, wide hips, a large posterior, and a broad chest with sloping shoulders. The arms are long with stylized hands, and both are fully articulated with small iron pins attaching limb to shoulder. The face displays exaggerated almond-shaped eyes, a wide mouth with thin lips, a prominent nose, and an exaggerated forehead. Small iron pins are nailed into the head in multiple aesthetic locations, though their significance is unknown. Custom museum-quality stand included. Size: 8.25" H (21 cm); 9" H (22.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-Nick Poolos collection, Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired before 1970
