  • THE CULTIVATION OF IRISES AT HORIKIRI is said to have been begun by Kodaka Izaemon in the 1660s, but it was not until the early nineteenth century that his descendant of the same name began to cultivate a large number of new varieties of hanashobu, reflecting the astonishing popularity of breeding flowers in late Edo. The iris was one of several flowering plants, including the chrysanthemum, morning glory, and azalea, which attracted cult-like followings that competed to produce ever more colorful and exotic varieties. The major advances in hanashobu breeding were actually made by two samurai retainers of the shogun, who passed on the fruits of their hobby to the Kodaka plantation for commercial exploitation.

In the immediate foreground of Hiroshige's print, almost life size, are three carefully detailed specimens of these new nineteenth-century iris hybrids. They are spatially separated from the background by water -- probably a small canal running through the iris bogs. In the distance, sightseers from Edo may be seen admiring the blossoms. Hiroshige is quoted as having said that so many lovely women from Edo came to view the blossoms that it was difficult to tell which were the real flowers.

Utagawa Hiroshige or Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858) was a Japanese artist during the 19th century and is considered the last great master of the ukiyo-e movement. His approach was more poetic and ambient than the typical ukiyo-e style, and his innovative compositions were a great influence to Western painters, such as Vincent van Gogh. The term ukiyo-e translates to "pictures of the floating world" and refers to a genre of Japanese art with a wide span of imagery such as kabuki actors, folk tales, landscapes, and even erotica. This movement was critical in forming the Western perception of Japanese art.
