Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 BCE to 800 CE. A fantastic shallow bowl carved from the bottom section of a gourd native to Southern Peru. The indented bottom of the gourd serves as the base, with rounded walls, a shallow interior cavity, and a squared-off rim. The exterior displays a lovely decorative register of classic repeating Nazca-style hummingbird figures with large eyes, pointed beaks, broad wings, and sweeping tail feathers, all designed using the meticulous pyro-engraving technique. Artifacts made from naturally-decaying material like wood or gourds are incredibly rare to find in such great condition, this bowl being of no exception. With its delicate details and recognizable form, this is a wonderful example of Nazca resourcefulness! Size: 5" Diameter (12.7 cm).

Repaired from several pieces with light adhesive residue along break lines. Age-commensurate surface wear, minor chips to rim and base, and small pitting holes within interior cavity. Light earthen deposits within break lines and engraved avian designs, with lovely mineral deposits throughout. An old white inventory sticker inside the bowl reads "D405" in black ink.
