Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A wonderful example of a redware plate, mold-made from ceramic and designed to be used at the table. The plate is striking in its simplicity, with a deep bowl and a wide, gently-sloping rim. It sits on a flat base with a slight ring bordering it. Roman redware items were made in vast factories, especially in the western part of the Empire, and shipped out far and wide - a plate like this could have graced an officer's table at Hadrian's Wall or been used in a villa in the Roman heartland of Italy. Size: 11.85" W x 1.95" H (30.1 cm x 5 cm)
