Description
This is the elegant, complete, two-volume Imprimerie d’Ad. Éverat et Comp. (Vol. I) and Imprimerie Schneider et Lancrand (Vol. II) printing, for Furne et Cie. of the 1839 french language publication, a “Nouvelle Édition” of the Histoire Naturelle de Lacépède, comprenant Les Cétacées, Les Quadrupèdes Ovipares, Les Serpents et Les Poissons (668 & 645 pages), the works of the french naturalist/scientist/illustrator Bernard-Germain-Étienne de La Ville-sur-Illon, comte de Lacépède (1756-1825), in the original french, with 36 full page color illustrations.
The full leather covers (6.75" x 10.375") are structurally sound, with no loose or detached boards.There are scuffs and surface cracks, as well as minor color fade, but no prominent stains. The spines are straight and secure, but with shallow end wear, particularly to the top of Volume I, which has a piece (about .25" x .5") missing (see photo).
The extensive gilt work and 5 raised bands are in excellent condition. as is the blind debossed center design on the front boards. The insides are exceptional. There is light foxing to a few pages. Most pages have none. There are no prominent stains. The marbled page edges and inside cover spreads are clean and unfaded. The bindings are tight, with no loose or missing pages. All 36 illustrations are unfaded, clean, and with their tissue guards in place.
There are no stamps or other attachments. There is no writing. There are no tears or notable creases. The marbled page edges are clean and unfaded, as is all text. The accompanying photos are accurate reflections of the set conditions.
