Description
This is the small (5.625" x 3.875"), slim (16 numbered pages) treatment by Chimioni, dealing with the representation of the arc of the circle, titled Tentamen Juxta Modum Arcus Circuli Rectificandi (all text in Latin), printed by Francisco Fernandez, in 1766, published, in Corduba, by D. Antonii del Hoyo.
The marbled paper cover is unfaded and without tears. All the pages, including the four-panel fold-out, are present. There are a number of stains, most to the borders, but no text or art is obscured. There are a few edge tears (the white marks to the edges are weights that hold the pages down, not tears).
The dedication spread, to the Marquis de Ossun, with an illustration of his coat-of-arms to the left, and the fold-out mathematical diagram, are the only illustrations.
This rare mathematical treatise is dedicated to Pierre Paul, Marquis d’Ossun (1713-1788) a French aristocrat. The first part of his adult life was spent in the French royal army. In 1751 he entered the diplomatic corps to became the ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples and the Two Sicilies.
In 1759 he was sent to Madrid as Louis XV’s official representative at the Spanish court. This work was printed in Spain during his tenure.
