Hans (Ronsard) Zatzka (Austria/Italy, 1859-1945) oil on canvas Orientalist harem scene, depicting two partially nude females in a lavish interior, with a balcony overlooking city rooftops. One figure stands by the window arranging flowers and the other is seated on a daybed with musical instruments; a hooka and oriental rug sit on the floor. Signed lower right "H. Zatzka" and additionally signed and inscribed en verso. Housed in the original parcel gilt carved and textured frame with scroll molded corners. Sight - 22 1/2" H x 30 3/4" W. Biography (courtesy of AskArt: The Artists' Bluebook): "Hans Zatzka is known for Religious, allegory, figure, genre and Oriental scene painting. He studied at the fine arts academy in Vienna between 1877 and 1892 before going on to decorate numerous churches in Vienna, Mayerling, Olmutz (now Olomouc, Czech Republic) and Innsbruck. He went to the Academy of Fine Arts from 1877 to 1882, where he studied under Professor Blaas and was awarded the Golden F¸germedal in 1880. He made several study trips to Italy; later he practiced fresco paintings in churches and did portraits. He developed a special interest in genre pictures, ideal depictions of women and cupids". Painting overall very good condition with light grime. Minor holes at top and bottom left corners. Scattered abrasions/nicks and grime to frame. No inpainting or alterations detected with black light.
