Ten (10) Southern related documents. 1st item: Pre Mexican-American War letter from Governor of Mississippi Albert G. Brown (1813-1880), Executive Chamber, Jackson, MS, to Brigadier General G. M. Brooke, County Military Division, New Orleans, LA, dated September 2, 1845, reading "General, The Battalion recently called for by the President from this States is not yet organized. This is to be attributed to the disappointment cause by a call for foot rather than for mounted men. I hope that between the thirteenth and last of this month, the battalion will be complete. The Secretary of War [William Learned Marcy], with whom I have communicated on the subject, authorizes one or more companies to be received in case the whole number demanded should not be offered...I would suggest...that Genl. J. M. Duffield of this place, (whom I designated, under authority from the Secretary, to muster in the First Reg't from this State) be charged by you with that duty, I have ordered him to take charge of the troops, until received into service". Includes note written by summarizing the contents of the letter, dated September 23, 1847, en verso. Folded - 11 3/8" H x 9 1/4" W. Unfolded - 11 3/8" H x 18 3/8" W. 2nd item: Letter from William Gannaway "Parson" Brownlow (1805-1877) responding to a request for his autograph from Thomas H. Farnham, Crosswicks, NJ, dated April 26, 1862, reading "I have your note requesting to be furnished with my autograph, and here with return you a specimen of my bad hand-writing. Very Respectfully, W. G. Brownlow". Also includes two envelopes with woodcut engravings of Brownlow, both postmarked circa 1861, one with a three cent George Washington stamp. Letter mounted to brown card stock. Letter - 3 1/4" H x 5 1/8" W. Card stock - 3 3/8" H x 6 3/8" W. Envelopes range in size from 3 1/4" H x 5 1/4" to 3 3/8" H x 6" W. 3rd item: Letter on carbon copy paper from John C. Spencer (1788-1855), as Secretary of the Treasury (1843-1844), addressed to Alexander K. McClung, Esq., Marshal for the Northern, District of Mississippi, Columbus, MS, reading "Sir, In directing a remittance of $2000 to be made to you on account of the expenses of the next term of the U.S.A...for the Northern District of Mississippi as requested by your letter...Very Respectfully Sir...J. A. Spencer Secretary of the Treasury". 10 3/4" H x 8" W. 4th item: Steel-plate engraved portrait of James Knox Polk (1795-1849), 11th President of the US, engraved by W. J. Edwards after the original painting by Savinien Edm Dubourjal (Massachusetts, 1795-1865), circa 1845. Features a three-quarter view of Polk surrounded by a decorative engraved frame, a vignette depicting the "Annexation of Texas" and a facsimile of Polk's signature, below. 9 3/4" H x 6 3/8" W. 5th item: "Brown's Improved Almanack, Pocket Memorandum, and Account Book, For the Year 1840" published by John F. Brown, Concord, NH. 12mo, stitched, yellow card stock front and back covers, front with woodcut of James K. Polk, back with John F. Brown and William White advertisements, frontispiece with woodcut engraving of the Pyramids of Giza, approx. 71 pages. Includes calendar pages and standard almanac features with twelve textual woodcut engravings of important American historical figures including Polk, Henry Clay, and Washington Irving. Also includes handwritten notations on the Pocket Memorandum pages. 5 3/8" H x 3 1/2" W. 6th-10th items: Five (5) Tennessee checks including two (2) Office of Cowan, McClung, and Company, lithographed by the Hatch Lithographic Company, No. 5420 and 8017, for the amount of $266.05 and $1,029.25, dated September 3, 1870 and November 11, 1972; one (1) First National Bank, Knoxville, engraved by the American Bank Note Company, No. 17559, for the amount of $60.84, dated January 14, 1870; one (1) East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia RailRoad Company, engraved by Hosford and Sons, No. 716, for the amount of $7.62, dated August 5, 1873; Bank of Clarksville, engraved by the American Bank Note Company, printed by Ferrell, Dietz, and Company, No. 4968, for the amount of $200, dated April 14, 1875.
