Nine (9) almanacs and songsters. 1st item: "The Stonewall Song Book: Being a Collection of Patriotic, Sentimental and Comic Songs", Second Edition, printed by George W. Gary, published by West and Johnson, Richmond, VA, 1863. Octavo, stitched, front paper wrapper printed in blue ink with vignette of Confederate "Stars and Bars" flag and cannon (back paper wrapper missing), 32 pages (incomplete). Includes "Southern Marseillaise", "The Original Home, Sweet Home" by John Howard Payne (1791-1852), and "Maryland, My Maryland!" by James R. Randall (1839-1908). 5 7/8" H x 4" W. 2nd item: "The Confederate States Almanac, and Repository of Useful Knowledge, for the Year 1863", Vol. 2d, First Series, published by H. C. Clarke, Vicksburg, MS. Octavo, stitched, front and back wrappers on dark orange necessity paper, 98 pages. Includes "Signs of the Zodiac" woodcut print and other standard almanac features, with Confederate related articles such as "Our Indian Relations", "Cotton and Sugar crop of 1862", "Population of the principal cities in the Confederacy", and "Diary of the War for Separation". 7 1/4" H x 4 5/8" W. 3rd item: "The Confederate States Almanac For The Year of Our Lord 1865" astronomical calculations made by T. P. Ashmore, published by Burke, Boykin, and Company, Macon, GA. Octavo, partially stitched, front paper wrapper with title and publication information, back paper wrapper with J. W. Burke and Burke, Boykin, and Company advertisements, 12 pages. Includes calendar pages, dates of equinoxes and solstices, movable feasts of the church, and other standard almanac features, with full page "Confederate States Government" list of elected officials, and a two and one half page article titled "A Condensed Description of Some of the Principal Towns in the Confederacy". 7" H x 4 3/4" W. 4th item: "The Soldier's Almanac. 1863" printed by Charles H. Wynne, published by the Soldiers' Tact Association, of the M. E. Church South, Richmond, VA. Octavo, stitched, front paper wrapper with title and publication information, 36 pages (incomplete). The almanac primarily includes articles with religious overtones, with additional articles titled "Means of Preserving Health in Camp", "Warning to Soldiers", "Praying For a Dying Enemy", "Curious and Interesting Rule for Finding the Day of the Week on Which Any Given Year Begins", and "When the States Seceded". 6" H x 3 3/4" W. 5th item: "Uncle True Songster" published by Fisher and Brother (circa 1850s), Philadelphia, New York, Boston, and Baltimore, circa 1850. 32mo, stitched with blue front and back paper wrappers with woodcut African American caricatures, repeated on the book's frontis and title page, approx. 148 pages. Content page back of book, pages are not in sequential order. Includes lyrics for songs such as "Major Andre's Death", "The Battle of Baltimore", and "Taxation of America". 4 1/2" H x 2 3/4" W. 6th item: "Christy's Panorama Songster; Containing the Songs as sung by The Christy, Campbell, Pierce's Minstrels, and Sable Brothers" published by William H. Murphy, New York, circa 1850. 12mo, stitched with brown paper wrappers, front with title, publication information, and woodcut African American caricature, back with Contents, approx. 136 pages. Pages are not in sequential order, frontispiece of the "Cachuga" with textual woodcut vignettes throughout. Includes lyrics for songs such as "Young Clem Brown", "Walk In Joe", and "Oh, Sea Bass". 6 1/8" H x 4" W. 7th item: "Beadle's Dime Pocket Songster No. 3" published by Beadle and Company, New York, 1865. 32mo, stitched with orange front and back paper wrappers, front with title, publication information, and woodcut engraving of a woman with a harp, back with Beadle and Company advertisement, 64 pages. Includes lyrics for songs such as " Scandal on the Brain", "Just Before the Battle, Mother", and "The Old Cabin Home". 3 1/4" H x 2 1/4" W. 8th item: "Ayer's American Almanac, For the Use of Farmers, Planters, Mechanics, and All Families. 1861" published by Dr. James C. Ayer and Company, Lowell, MA. Octavo, stitched, yellow front paper wrapper with title, publication information, and woodcut of an angel, yellow back paper wrapper with Ayers Medicine and Paist, Marmon, and Company, Bloomington, IL advertisements and calendar, 19 pages. Includes "Signs of the Zodiac" woodcut print, calendar pages, and dates of eclipses, interspersed with advertisements and testimonials for Ayer's medicines. 7 1/4" H x 4 1/2" W. 9th item: "B. A. Fahnestock & Co's. Free Almanac For the Year of Our Lord 1849" printed by M'Millin and Shryock, published by Benjamin A. Fahnestock and Company, Pittsburg, PA. Octavo, stitched, front paper wrapper with title and publication information, back paper wrapper with B. A. Fahnestock's Vermifuge advertisement, 36 pages. Includes calendar pages, dates of eclipses, movable feasts of the church, and other standard almanac features, with mention of John Quincy Adams's death in the Capitol at Washington, February 23, 1848, "having served his country for half a Century", interspersed with advertisements and testimonials for Fahnestock's Vermifuge medicine. 7 1/8" H x 4 1/4" W.
