Description
Tennessee pictorial needlework sampler, wool on linen, depicting a hunter on horseback with dog and pheasant at the horse's feet, surrounded by a floral border and other various pictorial motifs including a sailboat, butterfly and bird. Signed in cartouche, "Harriet Higgin's work aged 12 years 1860." Birdseye maple frame. 19 1/4" x 20" sight, 23" x 22" framed. Note: this sampler has been documented by the Tennessee Sampler Survey. According to genealogy research by the TSS, Harriet Higgins was born to Joseph and Elizabeth Higgins circa 1848. Her parents moved from Kentucky to Tennessee sometime around 1844-1848, and "by 1860 they were living in Montezuma, McNairy County, where Harriet may have made her horse motif sampler at the Montezuma Male and Female Institute." Condition
Small tacking holes at each corner with black stains surrounding them. Overall light discoloration to ground but little to no thread loss and minimal fading. Some damage to frame at right center.
