Description
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A very painterly rendering of Jesus' Resurrection - when Christ rose again on the third day after his death, one of the most important themes in religious art. Christ is depicted dramatically floating above an angel who kneels beside the tomb, and the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene looking on from a doorway on the right. A wonderful icon honoring the Resurrection, the "feast of feasts" celebrated not only on Easter but every Sunday. Size: 17.875" L x 11.75" W (45.4 cm x 29.8 cm)
Icons (icon means "image" in Greek) are sacred objects within the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition. Found in homes as well as churches, these painted images depict holy persons and saints as well as illustrate scenes from the Scriptures. Icons are not worshiped, but are instead venerated for their ability to focus the power of an individual's prayer to God. As such they are truly "windows into heaven."
