Description
1764 1st ed History of the World Guthrie Egypt Persia ROME Mecca MAPS 9v

William Guthrie was well known during the mid-18th-century for his many contributions to world history, especially through his extensive and thorough books. As a Scottish historian, he partnered with John Gray to compose ‘A General History of the World’ which covered the world’s history from creation through the early 1700s. This twelve-volume work received favorable reviews from ‘The Critical Review,’ even though it was not completed until 1767, three years after its first publication.

This set features incredible folding maps and illustrations as well as full-page engravings. This set includes extensive contents, however, some of the more impressive topics include discussions on Jewish traditions in Mecca, pagan superstitions in various cultures, Ancient Egypt kings and queens – history of Cleopatra, views of ancient ruins from Rome, Persia, and Greece, detailed descriptions of holy wars and Christian crusades against the Turks and Muslims, history of Dutch trade, and the rise of the British Empire.
