Description
Yellow bronze. Western India, ca. 15th cent.
A tirthankara, or jina, seated in a fully meditative position under a baldachin. Multi-tiered pedestal with decorative openwork and multiple accompanying figures strung together vertically on the arch-shaped background. On the back is an inscription, probably with - as is typical - a dating. The figure of the naked jina is delicately executed, deep patina and somewhat worn down due to cultic "grasping".
HEIGHT 10,8 CM
Once part of a North German collection, acquired before 1956 according to information provided.
