Item Details

Description

Near East/Middle East, Islamic World, ca. 7th to 8th century CE. A core-form glass amphoriskos with a tiny foot, ovoid body with twin handles, a cylindrical neck, and a slightly concave disk rim. The body is a combination of red, brilliant blue, white, and black glass, trailed in a feathered pattern around the body, and now having attained a silvery iridescence. Comes with custom stand. Size: 1.35" W x 3.5" H (3.4 cm x 8.9 cm); height on stand: 4.2" (10.7 cm)

Artisans created core-formed or sandcore vessels by trailing threads of molten glass over a "core" of sand or clay to form the vessel. These threads were oftentimes feathered or dragged to create intriguing decorative patterns. The term amphoriskos literally means "little amphora" and it is indeed a miniature amphora. This shape was quite popular as it was ideal to store precious oils, perfumes, or cosmetics.
