Item Details
Description
Western Europe, Spain, ca. 1500 CE. Two beautiful sheets from a vellum music manuscript, painted by monks with a Mozarabic chant, which is a result of Moorish influence on Gregorian chants. Each sheet has capitals, painted gorgeous, bright red with ornate blue hand-painted vine and geometric motifs behind them. These would be a beautiful item for anyone interested in choral music, the history of music, or the aesthetic value of written music. Size: 19.75" W x 27.75" H (50.2 cm x 70.5 cm)

Mozarabic is a 19th century term for the collection of Latin dialects heavily influenced by the Moors from the 5th to 13th centuries in the Iberian Peninsula. In Spain, it was replaced by Castilian Spanish and for two centuries, the language was essentially lost. Mozarabic was revived by Cardinal Cisneros (1436-1517) around 1500, forming a hybrid between the ancient Mozarabic and Gregorian chants that is distinct from the former's older form.
