Nachlass Gottfried Honegger (1917-2016), Zürich.

Aufgrund des Wertes der verarbeiteten Metalls wurden solche Eisen im Handel als vormünzliche Zahlungsmittel verwendet. Dieses sog. Primitivgeld wurde in standardisierte Formen geschmiedet und über weite Strecken getauscht.

Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts verboten dann die meisten Kolonialmächte solche Geldformen als Zahlungsmittel um ihre eigenen Währungen zu etablieren.
