Description
**First Time At Auction**

North America, United States, ca. 19th century CE. Two antique photographs from the early stages of photographic development. The first photograph is a daguerreotype of an elderly matron, shown in three-quarter portrait, wearing a dark-hued pleated dress and a white bonnet, with both hands resting at her waist. The daguerreotype is set within a finely-embossed brass mat, and has a protective glass cover panel mounted in a detailed brass perimeter. The second photograph is a tintype three-quarters portrait of a young woman wearing a dark dress with white sleeves and collar, her hair parted and in a bun. The tintype is set in an unadorned brass mat, covered by a protective glass panel, and framed by an embossed brass perimeter inside a leather-bound wooden case. A wonderful pair of portraits for any aficionado of antique photography. Size (daguerreotype): 3.25" W x 4.3" H (8.3 cm x 10.9 cm); size (tintype): 3.125" W x 3.625" H (7.9 cm x 9.2 cm).

Daguerreotype was the first publicly available photographic process, created by rubbing a sheet of silver-plated copper with fumes to make its surface light sensitive and then exposing it. The image was made visible by fuming it with mercury vapor, and then it was treated with liquid chemicals and dried before being enclosed behind glass to protect. The tintypes, meanwhile, are from the next phase of photographic technology. They replaced the daguerreotype by the 1860s because they could be made in a matter of minutes. People out at fairs or carnivals could often have their photographs taken and receive the images shortly thereafter.
