Description
**First Time At Auction**
South Pacific Islands, Trobriand Island, ca. early 20th century CE. A finely-detailed wooden club from this group of atolls east of New Guinea. Carved from a caramel-hued lightweight wood, this weapon has a paddle-shaped striking end and a rounded midrib which gradually tapers to an oval-shaped guard. The handle is wide enough to grasp firmly, and has a plug-shaped pommel. Stars, flowers, crosses, and zigzag lines are all painted in black and red on the club end, and the tip is embellished with a painted interior border line. A light-brown patina covers the surface of this lovely example of South-Island weaponry! Lucite block for display purposes only. Size: 25.5" L x 4.5" W (64.8 cm x 11.4 cm).

Condition
Surface wear commensurate with age and use, minor losses to widest areas of striking end and tip, fading to painted decorations, with abrasions and chips as well as light-brown patina throughout. An old inventory number "HC 202" is painted in red on the underside of the guard.
