STYLE OF
ODYE PEOPLE
REPUBLIC OF CAMEROON
Male Ancestral Figure
Carved Wood, with rich dark brown patina of full male figure standing, hands at waist, wearing blue fabric skirt with red fabric covered rope, heart-shaped face, elaborately carved hair with long double braid & beard, brass tack eyes, small red disk bead necklace, protruding belly, simple legs & feet
15.88 by 63.5 cm (6.25 by 25 in.)
Accompanied by appraisal for Lynn University by LEONARD KAHAN African Art appraiser-consultant - curator dated 4/30/09 stating " The surface and carving is a beautiful one. the patina seems old; note the lighter wood on the waist right under the slipping loincovering. And note the lighter, 'raw'' wood feet compared to the much handled and patined upper body. Also the textile and band around it seem old and the front of the feet seems worn/eroded as they should be at the bottom of the figure. Therefore the figure seems to be genuine. Stylistically it doesn't seem part of the Grassfields style, or the Duala style or anything from the Northern 'az:eas - so is it from the Cameroon Fang area? It's almost Baule except that it isn't. So; I'll leave it as a marvelous figure from the Cameroon-Fang areaValue: Estimated Value: $55,000"
Provenance:Gift of Arthur B. Steinman / 1999
