Full title - The American Biography containing Biographical Sketches of the Officers of the Revolution and of the Principal Statesmen of that Period to which are added the Life and Character of Benedict Arnold and the Narrative of Major Andre. Compiled from authentic sources. Very scarce 1833 first edition of one of the hallmark biographies from the first great American conflict. What sets this volume apart is the scope of the subject matter: Part I – American Military Officers; Part II – Foreign Officers in the American Service; Part III – Naval Officers in the American Service; Part IV – Eminent American Statesmen of the Revolution; plus a thorough examination of Benedict Arnold’s disservice to the country and of his cohort, Major Andre, the British spy who attempted to aid Arnold’s surrender of the fort at West Point. Edited by Amos Blanchard. Published by F. Kenyon. Scuffed with tips showing. Spine ends chipped. Gilt title still legible on spine, but just so. Small slightly impressed area on front cover. Hinges cracked but holding. Frontispiece partly missing with remainder nearly cut in two. Text block complete and solid with typical foxing throughout. 616 pages. 5.5 x 8.75.
