Description
Studies in Design by Christ. Dresser extremely scarce, complete 1st edition.
Complete first edition in book form with 60 splendid, large, chromolithographic patterns (all but three in color) by one of the world’s first industrial designers. Originally published in 20 separate parts with 3 plates each, this is the complete 1876 first edition book that is nearly non-existent on today’s book market. Only one other copy was found in the MAAS (Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences) in Australia. Christopher Dresser championed design reform in 19th-century Britain while embracing modern manufacturing in the development of wallpaper, textiles, ceramics, glass, furniture and metalware. He was perhaps the greatest of commercial designers, imposing his fantasy and invention to the ordinary output of British industry. Published c1876 by Cassell, Petter and Calpin. Ex-library. Cloth tape present on outside board edges. Fraying to spine ends. Some scuffing to rear cover. Front hinge weak but holding. Ffep brittle. Inscription on second endpaper. All tissue guards still present. One tissue guard torn badly; plate X has tissue remnant adhering to upper half of design; plate XLI not present but no evidence of removal (may have been published without it—see plate L); plate XLII with tissue adhering, obscuring much of the plate; plate L published upside down; plate LX nearly detached. 60 pages of illustrations; 40 pages of text. 12.5 x 17.
