Description
Two c. 1910 Borgfeldt Coronet Limoges Game Bird Plates. Both signed by Limoges artist L. Coudert. Each measures 10"x10"x1.50". Weight combined 2 pds 8 oz. PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Estate. Though George Borgfeldt was a prominent New York importer of porcelains with decorating studios in Germany and Paris, the Paris studio which decorated mostly Limoges porcelains thrust the company into the limelight ca. 1905. The company was in business possibly as long as 1976, but Gaston dates most Limoges examples between 1906 & the 1920s, the dates apparently corresponding with the German Wreath stamp. The signature hand painted line was the Coronet, in which the production included many plaques and collector plates richly decorated in 17th century French & Dutch Cavalier portraits, as well as monks and peasant women. The cornerstone of George Borgfeldt Coronet was based upon the Magnificent Game Bird portrait plates, chargers & wall plaques, with many hand signed by some of the most revered Limoges artists of the late 19th & early 20th century. Barbet, J. Barin, A. Bronssillon, L. Coudert, Dubois, Duval, Furlaud, Le Pic, Luc, Noryl, Pradet, C. Rossier, and J. Yarin constitute some of the most valuable Limoges signatures, and all worked with George Borgfeldt.
