WILLIAM H. LISTER (AMERICAN, B.1866) BEER ADVERTISING ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATION, oil on canvas laid on board, featuring a jovial, ruddy-faced fellow in tuxedo holding a glass of beer aloft, applied printed cut-out plate of food on the counter-top in front of him, signed and inscribed verso "W. H. Lister / Orchard Way, Wayne, PA", printed label for "The Wolf Company" in Philadelphia applied verso. Unframed. Circa 1940. 28" x 20".
Very good overall condition with minor abrasions and areas of discoloration.
Provenance: From the private collection of Gary and Dr. Joy Graham, Winchester, VA.
Catalogue Note: Born in Philadelphia, illustrator William H. Lister studied with Howard Pyle and was a member of the Sketch Club in the city. He appears to have been commissioned by the Wolf Company, likely a beverage enterprise in Philadelphia, to produce illustrations for magazine or newspaper advertisements, the present work being one such example.
