This beautifully preserved engraving from the Grands Voyages, de Bry's monumental collection of history and travel narratives, depicts the hanging of rebellious Spaniards on the orders of Columbus, who had returned to Hispaniola on September 9, 1494, to find the island in disorder and chaos.
