Roman Empire, Northern Africa, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. This robust and mold-made terracotta vessel features a flat concentric ring base with a slightly concaved center, sloping sides, rounded shoulders with an abstract trident motif, a small tab-shaped handle, a large wick spout, two small fill holes, and a recessed tondo displaying a worn bust of Astarte, the Phoenician goddess of fertility and war. Astarte is shown wearing a flowing robe and has a large diadem on her head with two horns extending upwards as a symbol of strength and authority. Found in Oxford, England. Size: 4.5" L x 3.125" W x 2" H (11.4 cm x 7.9 cm x 5.1 cm).
Provenance: Ventura, California, USA collection acquired before 1980
