Description
Taxile Doat UNIVERSITY CITY Arts & Crafts Pottery Covered Jar - Signed "U.C" & Dated "1914". In very nice condition. No chips or cracks. Between 1909 and 1914 University City, Missouri, was the site of a unique art academy and porcelain works. Established by Edward G. Lewis (1869ÂÂ1950), the art school and pottery was a division of the Peoples University. Lewis brought together a faculty of renowned ceramists from Europe and America to teach and to produce exquisite vases, tiles, and other ceramics. He enlisted the talents of the French ceramist Taxile Doat, who had already enjoyed a long career as a decorator in the National Porcelain Manufactory at Sèvres. Although the collaboration of these artists was short-lived, they each produced some of their most celebrated work in University City. 2x2
