Description
Ancient Greece, Archaic Period, ca. late 6th to early 5th century BCE. A press-molded terracotta ceramic profile of a boar with a tubular snout, globular eyes, perky ears, and four slender legs. A lengthy tail drapes down off of a bulbous posterior, and the corpulent abdomen exhibits four suckling udders. Boars were some of the most widely-hunted animals in the ancient Greek world, due to their association with death, and this plaque may perhaps have been displayed in an ancient hunter's lodge or in the home of a prominent huntsman. Size: 6" L x 3" H (15.2 cm x 7.6 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.
