Raised in Ambler, Pennsylvania, after graduating Dublin High School in 1985, was accepted to Kutztown University, where he got his undergraduate degree in 1989. Moving off campus in 1988 his junior year, He lived in the house next to the childhood home and home of Keith Haring's parents. On one of his several trips back to Kutztown, Robert and Keith met at Kutztown University Bookstore where he was doing artwork and signing autographs. Robert went to this event where Keith asked him what he would like done. Robert asked him to draw this image of two figures holding a heart.
